Effects of Earthworms On Soil
By Damien Gray
Serious gardeners are always looking for ways to improve the quality of the soil in which their plants are bedded. One of the most effective is environmentally friendly, makes great use of one of nature’s hardest workers and is completely cost free if you choose. It’s the common earthworm who will gladly take whatever leftover organic rubbish you have and turn it into the kind of soil in which your plants will thrive. So how exactly can the earthworm be such a benefit to your garden's soil? Here is a short list that will explain exactly that. • They break up organic material by tunnelling through it. • Their tunnelling process acts to mix the organic materials into the soil. • Thick layers of leaf litter and root mats in paddocks are broken up by earthworms. • They help nutrients present in the soil to become available in a form that can easily be used by plants. • The structure of the soil is improved through worm casts. • Because the structure of the soil is improved, the amount of water the soil can hold is increased. • They allow the plant roots to penetrate more deeply into the soil by providing channels from where they’ve burrowed. • They assist in reclaiming spoiled land by increasing soil fertility. So next time you’re digging in your garden and you dig up an earthworm, your plants would appreciate it if you carefully replaced it.
