Is It Worth Insulating Your Doors To Stop Heat Loss? By Damien Gray There are many small features around our homes that play a part in the overall size of our carbon footprint and the impact we have on our environment. One of those seemingly insignificant factors are the external doors to our house. In fact, external doors are only responsible for around 5 per cent of the heat loss from the home. However, a solid wood door is a very poor insulator, leaking heat at twice the rate of an uninsulated wall. Improving the insulation provided by the door will make a noticeable difference to your ability to heat a room. Rough calculations estimate that installing good quality insulated doors at the front and back of the house may cost around $500. The monetary savings each year may only add up to $20 while the carbon savings can be something like 100kg. Although there is a twofold saving to be made, it will take a long time to make back your original outlay. For some, though, the upfront cost is not the important factor that will influence their descision.
