National Lightning Safety Awareness Week
Highlighting the dangers of hanging around outside when a thunderstorm has hit the area is one of the focuses of this year's national Lightning Awareness Week which is in progress from June 22-28, 2008. The campaign was first launched in 2000 to increase awareness of the dangers of lightning. This year the campaign stresses the importance of getting to safety before the lightning strikes with an emphasis placed on the public service announcement slogan “When thunder roars, go indoors!” A sobering thought is pointed out in the statement announcing the launch of national Lightning Awareness Week when it reminds us that lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from the rain area during a thunderstorm. Just because you’re not being rained on doesn’t mean that you’re safe from a possible lightning strike. The following guidelines are recommended by the Lightning Safety Awareness group: - When thunder is about, go indoors. Take shelter in a large enclosed structure such as a building. - While indoors, avoid contact with electrical appliances such as computers, corded telephones and never take a bath or shower during a storm. - Avoid open areas and never shelter under a tree. - Remember that doghouses aren’t safe in a thunderstorm, take action to protect your pets.
