Smoking Juror
Sometimes it’s reassuring to find out that no, you’re not the dumbest person on the planet. That’s the thing about this place, it takes all sorts and sometimes their stories bring a welcome smile to the face. A woman in Houston was doing her civic duty, having been called in for jury service the other day. The case wasn’t going to be a big one, in fact it was just a marijuana possession rap. The selection process was going well and the jury pool had dwindled down to only 20 when the judge decided to call a 45 minute recess. This gave everyone a chance to stretch their legs, get a bite to eat or answer a call of nature. Just the usual things you do when you’ve been cooped up in a small room for an extended length of time. Not our juror. She did the other thing that many people do, she stepped outside for a smoke. The problem was, she didn’t light up a cigarette – she lit up a joint! Right outside the courthouse. Anyway, as you can imagine with the place literally crawling with cops, she was quickly arrested, excused from jury duty and charged with possession of marijuana. Now she’s due back in court only this time she’ll be sitting in a completely different part of the courtroom than she was originally expecting to be sitting. I wonder what she’ll do to calm her nerves…
